FOCCAS RECEIVES $1,000 petfinder foundation logoGrant

This fall, FOCCAS received a $1,000 Petfinder Foundation grant to purchase vaccines to be used on puppies and kittens under 8 weeks old. The grant was awarded to support the shelter's new practice of vaccinating puppies and kittens at an earlier age than is normally recommended.

Because shelter animals are at higher risk of disease and illness, it is now considered normal shelter practice to vaccinate at 4-6 weeks old and every 2 weeks after that through 16 weeks or adoption, whichever comes first.

Colusa County Animal Control's budget is insufficient to purchase vaccines, so FOCCAS purchases all vaccines and tests for the shelter. This is a crucial first step in keeping shelter animals safe and free from diseases, some of which -- such as parvo -- can be fatal.

FOCCAS is very grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for providing us this financial boost to expand the population of vaccinated animals at our shelter. Because the shelter is so small, it will likely take a year or more to utilize the entire grant, since it is only purchasing vaccines for animals under 8 weeks.

The puppies in the story to the left are some of the first to benefit from this grant. They arrived at the shelter at about 4 days of age. They were immediately transferred to a FOCCAS foster home.
